Shell Hagstone ~ East Coast Florida ~ Beaded Necklace

This necklace is 20 inches in circumference not counting the Hagstone.

I used 8/0 Turquoise Picasso Seed Beads, 9/0 Czech Seed Beads and Antique Bronze Crimp beads, Wire Guardians, Jump Rings and Lobster Claw Clasp.

Let me tell you the backstory on this Hag.
I had just moved to Fort Pierce, Florida from Portland Oregon on my Spiritual Journey.
I answered my calling to come to the ocean. There is so much more to my personal story but i digress.
So as i am spending my moments in the Ocean breathing in the feeling of freedom, I start to pay attention to all the stones and shells rolling into my feet in the surf. How strange these small stones with holes through them. So many different shapes and sizes, small and large. I picked up some and put them in my pockets and continued my walk on the beach.
Each time i went to the beach i started looking for these strange shells and stones with holes through them. Collecting them, dropping them into the bag i carry with me.
Then i finally went to the internet to see how they got holes through them in the water.
What i found was amazing to me. Hag Stones, Adderstones, so many different names for these Mystical stones with a long Folklore.
I am back in Portland now with buckets of different hagstones and ready to part with them.

This little beauty here is one of those. 💜

A shell hagstone is a naturally occurring or beach-tumbled sea shell with a perfectly drilled or weathered hole all the way through it. Similar to traditional rock "hag stones" (or adder stones), they are highly prized in folklore, witchcraft, and beachcombing.

Hag stones have many names. Adder stones, witch stones, fairy stones, holy stones (sacred) or holey stones (secular), serpents eggs, snakes eggs, hex stones, wish stones, Odin’s stones, Ephialtes stones, milpreve in Cornwall, glain neidr in Wales, gloine nan Druidh in Scotland, none of which apart from the Celtic are often site specific.

The thing that sets hag stones apart from other pebbles you might pick up at the beach is their holes. These holes can be such perfect circles that it's hard to believe they occur naturally, but the most frequent explanation is that they are the result of hundreds of years of erosion from the movements of seawater.

It’s all in the hole, you see. The theory goes that only good things can pass through a hole, so while good fortune and good wishes will find you through a hag stone, bad luck and evil thoughts are too big to be able to pass through the hole and become stuck in the middle.
This belief may be bolstered by the centuries old belief that magic cannot work on moving water. So, since the hole in a hag stone was created by moving water, it works as a sort of ‘shield’ against bad spells.

Although Hag Stones primarily consist of Flint, Sandstone, or Limestone, you can also find them in other rock and mineral varieties,
